Specter and Gonzales

From Ted Olsen at Christianity Today weblog:

Just a guess, but the uproar from conservative groups over Sen. Arlen Specter’s chairmanship of the Senate Judiciary Committee may be over. He’s backed way, way down, and appears in today’s Wall Street Journal op-ed pages promising to support pro-life judges.
Religious conservatives may not fuss about Gonzales’s appointment as attorney general, thinking that it might at least keep him off the Supreme Court.

These are my thoughts exactly. I plan to call my senators again about Specter, but I think maybe he will be somewhat careful not to publicly “Bork” any pro-life judges that Bush may nominate just because we’ve made such a fuss about him. Surely he knows the spotlight is on him. As for Gonzales, I think Bush probably owed him something, and he’ll be just fine over in the Attorney General’s office fighting terrorism and enforcing the laws. And I pray he won’t be heading for the Supreme Court anytime soon.
