Hymn Sing!

Have you ever been to a Hymn Sing? It’s just what it sounds like: people getting together and singing hymns, for fun and to glorify and praise the Lord.

Robert Cotrill, a Canadian pastor, writes here about how to host a community hymn sing.

The Common Room: All Day Singings

We’re getting to the end of my Top 100 Hymns Project. I thought it might be fun to give you all a chance to guess the top five hymns on the list. Click on the words Top 100 Hymns Project to see the hymns that have already been on the list, and leave your guess for the top five in the comments. I’ll send a prize package, items to be chosen by me, to the person who gets the closest to guessing the top five hymns and their position on the list.

The Top Five Hymns in the survey will be posted this week So, happy guessing and singing and reading to all!

  1. Our church does a Praise Night a couple of times a year, and we did one Hymn Night last year, too.

I’d be shocked if Amazing Grace wasn’t in the top five, and there has to be another Christmas Hymn or two in there. So I’d go with:

    1. Amazing Grace
    2. Silent Night
    3. A Might Fortress is Our God
    4. Away in a Manger
    5. The Doxology

  2. I’m sure the first two must be in the top 5, not so sure about the others. I skimmed the ones you’ve already posted and don’t remember seeing “Joy to the World” or “What a Friend We Have in Jesus.” Sorry if I missed them!

    Amazing Grace
A Mighty Fortress is Our God
    The Doxology
    Joy to the World
What a Friend We Have in Jesus

I’ve enjoyed these hymns so much! Thanks. (I haven’t been to a hymn sing in a long time, but I love them. In one church we were in, the pastor, who was a wonderful pianist, would begin to play a hymn and we would see who could name it first!)

  3. Just checked and “What a Friend” and “Joy to the World” are both listed. Sooo… hmm… “Silent Night” is a good choice. Is “Trust and Obey” listed? No time to check. And enough blathering!

  4. Well, I guess I didn’t get back in time. I’m sure

A mighty fortress is our God
    Come, thou almighty King
    and
    Amazing grace
must be in the top 100.
    Great is thy faithfulness
is certainly not surprising. And I guess I’ll go with the consensus and say “Silent Night” for the last spot. So, belatedly
    1. A mighty fortress is our God
    2. Come, thou almighty King
    3. Amazing grace
    4. Silent night
    5. Great is thy faithfulness (fait accompli)

“Jesus shall reign where’er the sun”, “For the beauty of the earth”, “O come, all ye faithful”, “Come, ye thankful people, come”, “Now thank we all our God” and “Best be the ties that blind” would be nos. 5a through 5f… 😉

  5. On the other hand, I could go with a set that included “I love to tell the story” and, say, “Sing them over again to me”, “Break thou the bread of life”, “In the cross of Christ I glory”, and maybe “St. Patrick’s Breastplate”…

So many great hymns, so few chances to sing them! Thanks be to God for an eternity of opportunity to praise!

  6. Hymn sings have an endearing place in my heart. My favorite place for a hymn sing, this summer at the Iowa State Fair! Every day during the fair there was a sponsored hymn sing! The day I was there there were about 100 people packed into a tiny church singing hymns. Priceless.
