A Dillar, A Dollar

We’re starting school this morning. Stay tuned for further updates . . .

12:15 P.M. Well, we’ve read two chapters from Banner in the Sky,, the story of a sixteen year old boy who wants to climb the only mountain in the Alps that hasn’t yet been conquered, called in the book The Citadel. It’s loosely based on the true story of the first ascent of the Matterhorn in 1865. Karate Kid (10) also started on his reader, Freckles by Gene Stratton Porter.

I started The Story of the World: Ancient Times by Susan Wise Bauer and First Language Lessons for the Well-Trained Mind by Jessie Wise with my two youngest, Betsy Bee (8) and Z-Baby (6). Karate Kid (10) is doing a mixture of Sonlight 6 and some other stuff I pulled in to study ancient history and literature with us, and Brown Bear Daughter is starting Ancient History: A Literature Approach from Beautiful Feet.

The younger two have done their math (Miquon), and the older two are doing theirs (Saxon 7/6) while we listen to cello music on the radio program, Exploring Music. It’s all going fairly well, despite a bit of grumbling. (Brown Bear Doesn’t want to listen to classical music, and Karate Kid doesn’t want to do Saxon math.) I’m determined to do everything on the list, at least on this first day. I’ll let you know how it goes . . .

  1. Sherry,

    Good for you guys!!

I am so wiped out from a summer of keeping our house on the market that I haven’t even ordered all the stuff I need for this year yet! We are using Sonlight Alt. 6 this year for a 6th and 9th grader with a 3rd grader listening in. I haven’t ordered all the books yet, but I’d love to know which ones aren’t as good as the rest, if you know… I’d like to do the 4-day schedule but it cuts out some of my favorites!

Thanks for your thoughts…and hope your school year is huge success!

  2. I’m not much help, Jeanne. I looked at the list for Alt.6, and I like all the read louds that I’m familiar with. Actually, I didn’t much care for The Golden GOblet, but my urchins loved it when I read it to them a few years ago.

As far as readers go, my son read Shadow of a Bull last year when we were doing World Geography and he didn’t like it too much. We loved the Beduin’s Gazelle. The Shakespeare Stealer and Phantom Tollbooth are a couple of my favorites.

  3. Thanks, Sherry–that’s helpful! Too bad I already own Shadow of a Bull, which didn’t excite my older son either when he read it a couple years ago.

I have chained myself and my laptop to a table at Panera this afternoon, and I WILL have this order put together before I leave it. That’s my goal for today, and I was getting nothing done at home. Figured I might as well let the troops follow their whims today without me around…as those days are numbered!

    🙂

    Jeanne
