Sandwich Day

John Montague, Fourth Earl of Sandwich, was born November 3, 1718 in London. He became England’s first Lord of the Admiralty and later Postmaster General. Captain James Cook named the Sandwich Islands for the Earl of Sandwich. He was also an inveterate gambler, and of course, the story is that he invented the sandwich while engaged in an extended gambling session that lasted over twenty-four hours. Not wanting to leave the game, he asked his servants for a meal he could eat conveniently without making a mess. He got The Sandwich.

The Sandwich Project A website with recipes for 2273 sandwiches (as of November, 2005). If you don’t find your favorite there, you can add it to the list.

  1. My favourite would be a roast beef sandwich.
Or a salad sandwich with mushrooms.
Corned beef with mustard is yum too.
    I am hungry now.

  2. My favorite is the Cuban sandwich.
    Or club sandwich.
Or any kind of panini sandwich.

    I’m hungry now, too! 🙂

  3. Grilled cheese and ham is good.

I also like scrambled egg and cheese on toast.

Then there’s the grilled chicken and swiss cheese on honey wheat bread sub sandwich that I had today for lunch (Happy Birthday to me as well as the Earl!).

  4. Right this minute I would like a Liversausage sandwich with mayo, mustard, lettuce, tomato, salt and pickles on soft white bread ;o)
Just like my mom made them!

  5. This would have to be the “Ebbot’s Field Stuffed Knish” from Manny Hattan’s New York Deli in Austin, TX.

Grilled Turkey and Sauteed Onions with Jalapeno Jack Cheese in a Knish (something similar to a seasoned mashed potato pastry encrusted slice of HEAVEN).

It is like Texas meets New York – something entirely wonderful and different. It can’t be beat!

It is worth the three hour drive from Houston just to eat there for lunch!
