Saturday Review of Books: December 5, 2009

“The expression of truth, the transmission of knowledge and emotions between man and man from generation to generation, these are the purposes of literature. Not to read books is like being shut up in a dungeon while life rushes by outside.”~Lyman Abbott

How would you describe the “purpose of literature”? Does good literature have to express truth or transmit knowledge and emotions, or can one purpose be just to entertain?

Welcome to this week’s Saturday Review of Books.

Here’s how it usually works. Find a review on your blog posted sometime this week of a book you’re reading or a book you’ve read. The review doesn’t have to be a formal sort of thing. You can just write your thoughts on a particular book, a few ideas inspired by reading the book, your evaluation, quotations, whatever.

Now post a link here to the specific post where you’ve written your book review. Don’t link to your main blog page because this kind of link makes it hard to find the book review, especially when people drop in later after you’ve added new content to your blog. In parentheses after your name, add the title of the book you’re reviewing. This addition will help people to find the reviews they’re most interested in reading.

Thanks to everyone for participating.

  1. Entertainment is certainly a worthy component of literature. Not sure what the proper ratios for truth/knowledge/entertainment would be though. And yes, I know I’m a geek for even considering putting percentages on the question.

  2. Good morning, readers! I went on a book bender over the holiday, and had a blast. Not a dud among them, even the “diet” book!

Sherry, can you delete the duplicate entry (currently #65)–I hit enter as I was trying to do the next book, so doubled up on 64, Eat Drink and Weigh Less.

    Happy reading, all!

  3. I finally got mine posted, Sherry. I try to stay off the computer on the weekends, so sometimes it’s late when I get my link up. I reviewed Some Wildflower in My Heart this week. I LOVED it!
