Saturday Review of Books: February 7, 2015

“I have always suspected that authors lie about the books they read, their purported influences, much as men lie about their sex lives; they are at once ashamed and vain, reluctant to be judged, hiding behind a safe parapet like Joyce and Proust and Kafka.” ~Brian Glanville

Welcome to the Saturday Review of Books at Semicolon. Here’s how it usually works. Find a book review on your blog posted sometime during the previous week. The review doesn’t have to be a formal sort of thing. You can link to your thoughts on a particular book, a few ideas inspired by reading the book, your evaluation, quotations, whatever.

Then on Friday night/Saturday, you post a link here at Semicolon in Mr. Linky to the specific post where you’ve written your book review. Don’t link to your main blog page because this kind of link makes it hard to find the book review, especially when people drop in later after you’ve added new content to your blog. In parentheses after your name, add the title of the book you’re reviewing. This addition will help people to find the reviews they’re most interested in reading.

After linking to your own reviews, you can spend as long as you want reading the reviews of other bloggers for the week and adding to your wishlist of books to read.

You can go to this post for over 100 links to book lists for the end of 2014/beginning of 2015. Feel free to add a link to your own list.

If you enjoy the Saturday Review of Books at Semicolon, please invite your friends to stop by and check out the review links here each Saturday.

  1. I am actually on time this week! (!!) Aaaaaaand the books I reflected on were all, actually, yanno, religious. So it kind of fits well.

Anyway. Thanks again for doing this. I really appreciate it! Off to check out everyone else’s blogs now.

  2. Hi, everyone, especially Sherry. I’m glad to be back; it’s been a while. Funny, how doing two readalongs at once (The Sandman series plus The Odyssey) kind of took everything over.

I want to let readers know of two cool things: one is that I’m doing a Ulysses (by Joyce, like referenced in today’s quote!) readalong, with the discussion starting on 2/16. I’ve never read it, am intimidated by it, worry I won’t care for it, but am going to do it anyway! http://www.girldetective.net/?p=6103

The other thing is that this year’s Morning News Tournament of Books candidates have been announced, so if you want to participate or just read about a fun literary set of matches, check out the details here:

    Happy reading, everyone!
