I just popped over here from your good fiction list.

I wonder if you've read Home? I could never bring myself to read Gilead, for reasons given in my review of Home, but really enjoyed her latest novel:

Horrible book. Maybe I'm just saying that because I had to read Gilead for class but wow, it's tedium at its finest. Okay no, I'm being harsh. It's a pleasant read. Nothing exciting happens but yeah, if you inject a few dozen latent desire theories into your understanding of the story, you could make it interesting. John Ames, don't you ever dare wake up.

We're reading this novel for our (Presbyterian) church book club. It's full of insights -- theological, social, philosophical and just plain human -- and well worth pondering. Actually, the observation which has stuck with me best is almost trivial: the point at which he wonders how birds roosted in the sunlight before there were overhead wires.

Marilynne Robinson is a member of the Congregational United Church of Christ in Iowa City. The United Church of Christ is a denomination within the Reformed Tradition, and she captures the spirit of that communion very well in her novel.

Ames was likely from a reformed denomination -- CRC or RCA

He loved Calvin too much to be anything else.

And yes, it is an astonishingly good book, worth paying full price.
